The search for a good vet.

Published by deedz26 at 12:52 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Like any Chicagoan that is single and lives alone, finding a vet to keep our little furry friend happy is essential to having a long lasting friendship. Until, of course, you need to put them down.

I own a cat, two cats actually, and one has some bumps on her abdomen. Due to the financial struggle in this country, I am one of those people that live paycheck to paycheck and can’t simply come up with a large sum of cash up front. So, I seek the “payment plan people.”(For those that don’t know what that is - and it’s possible - “payment plan people” are those businesses that offer payment plans if you cannot fork over hundreds of dollars in a single day for a service. In this day and age, they have become the best friends of 50% of this country - it could be more.)

I have owned many pets in the past and have been a loyal customer to a veterinarian in my area for 25 years (this is including trips with my mother when I was not old enough to drive.) You would think that based off this loyalty, I could get a break and he would offer a payment plan to us, since before, our financial situation was fine. The nurse on the phone was rather aloof, she kept avoiding the question of “Can we get a payment plan?” Not just that, but the last time I brought my cat there, the vet didn’t even know what was wrong with her. He was talking about surgery, biopsy, etc. Just adding on fee after fee to the grand total!

I had heard about the Animal Welfare League through a friend that had to take his dog there a couple months back for surgery. He had nothing but good things to say about them, so I took him up on his suggestion. The place was not as packed as when he went there (he had mentioned the wait could be long) and within two hours we were seen by a doctor.

What impressed me about this doctor, was that just by looking at the bumps, he knew what was wrong-mammary cancer. With his diagnosis backed up by X-rays, he quoted us for a decent price. The visit and X-Rays alone came out to be much cheaper than what it would’ve costed me, had I gone to my original veterinarian.

My cat is scheduled to go under October 7th, I am keeping my fingers crossed that she pulls through.
